A chawan isn't just a cup — its wide mouth and low walls are shaped specifically to give a bamboo whisk room to move, which is why whisking matcha in a regular mug never quite works. Beyond function, though, a chawan is also the one piece of matcha equipment people actually display. Here's what's in our range, how to pick one, and how to actually use it once it arrives.
For understated, everyday use
The Artful Grids Matcha Bowl (₹1,125) keeps things quiet — a crisp white surface with a fine geometric grid pattern. If your kitchen leans minimal, this is the one that won't fight with anything else on the counter.
For a one-of-a-kind, artisanal piece
Our Raku-fired bowls are each genuinely unique, since the crackle glaze forms differently every firing: Raku Crackle Glaze Handcrafted, Volcanic Earth Raku, and White Lightning Raku (all ₹1,125).
For gifting, especially for someone who'd appreciate the detail
The Sakura Blossom Matcha Bowl (₹1,575) is hand-adorned with pink blossom detailing — our most-gifted bowl by a clear margin.
For a bolder, statement piece
The Aegean Coast Bowl (₹1,125) and The Golden Nebula Bowl (₹1,237) both lean more decorative.
For someone who wants the drinking vessel, not the whisking bowl
Worth noting: the Celestial Ryu Japanese Glass (₹1,425) is a cup, not a chawan — better suited to sipping a finished matcha or tea than whisking one.
How to use your new bowl — step by step
What you need: 2g matcha, 70ml water at 80°C, and a bamboo whisk.
- Hold the bowl steady with one hand flat against its base — the wide shape means it won't tip easily, but a firm grip stops it sliding on the counter while you whisk.
- Sift 2g of matcha into the bowl.
- Add about 20ml of the water first and whisk it into a smooth paste, keeping the whisk tip low and pressed gently against the curve of the bowl.
- Add the remaining 50ml of water.
- Whisk briskly in a "W" motion for 15–20 seconds — the wide, shallow shape of a proper chawan is what gives the whisk enough room to move without splashing over the sides.
- Serve straight from the bowl, or pour into a smaller cup like the Celestial Ryu Japanese Glass if you'd rather sip than whisk-and-drink from the same vessel.
However you choose, the bowl is only half the equation
A beautiful chawan with the wrong whisk will still under-foam. Next up: the one whisk we actually stock, and why prong count matters more than most people think. Read the whisk guide →
