Popping boba isn't the same as tapioca pearls — instead of a chewy starch ball, each little sphere is a thin gel skin around a burst of fruit juice, so it "pops" in your mouth with actual flavour rather than just texture. No cooking required — it comes ready to eat straight from the tin. Here's how our four flavours compare, and exactly how to use them.
Lychee — the classic starting point
Lychee Popping Boba is the flavour most bubble tea menus lead with — floral, delicately sweet, and the safest first flavour if you've never tried popping boba before.
Mango Passion Fruit — for a tropical, tangier hit
Mango Passion Fruit Popping Boba pairs the sweetness of mango with passion fruit's sharper edge. It holds up particularly well against green tea, since the tanginess cuts through the tea's bitterness instead of getting lost in it.
Peach — the lightest, most drinkable option
Peach Popping Boba is subtler than the other three — closer to a peach oolong than a punchy fruit candy.
Strawberry Dragon Fruit — the boldest, most photogenic
Strawberry Dragon Fruit Popping Boba is the deepest in colour and the sweetest of the four.
Exactly how to use it
What you need per glass:
- 2–3 tablespoons (about 40–50g) popping boba, drained of most of their liquid
- 1 tall glass of iced tea, soda, or plain water (about 350–400ml)
Steps:
- Open the tin and, using a spoon, scoop out 2–3 tablespoons of the popping boba, letting the excess syrup drain back into the tin.
- Drop them into the bottom of an empty glass first — always add them before the drink, not after, or they'll just float on top.
- Add ice on top of the boba.
- Pour your tea or drink in slowly, filling to about 1cm from the rim.
- Serve with a wide bubble tea straw (a regular straw is usually too narrow for the pearls to pass through).
Storing an opened tin: reseal it and keep it in the fridge, and use it within 3–5 days for the best texture — the skin softens the longer it sits in liquid.
