Both of these get you to the same green paste. They get you there very differently — and one of them is a noticeably better deal if sushi night happens more than once a month.
The real difference
S&B Wasabi Tube (43g, ₹290) is ready in seconds — squeeze and serve. Its ingredient list is horseradish, mustard powder, vegetable oil, salt, sugar, stabilizers, wasabi flavouring, and natural colouring. That mix of oil and stabilizers is what keeps it smooth and shelf-stable in tube form, but it also means the 43g tube works out to roughly ₹6.70 per gram.
Wasabi Powder (1kg, ₹950) has exactly one ingredient: horseradish. Nothing else. You mix it with water yourself, which takes about two minutes including resting time. At ₹950 for a full kilogram, it comes to roughly ₹0.95 per gram — about a seventh of the tube's price per gram — and the 24-month shelf life as a dry powder means it doesn't go to waste between sushi nights the way an open tube can.
Buy the tube if you make sushi occasionally and want zero prep. Buy the powder if sushi is a regular thing in your house, or if you'd rather control exactly what's in your wasabi — it's the only one of the two that's a single, recognisable ingredient.
How to actually use the powder
This is the part that puts people off buying powder over the tube. It shouldn't — it's four steps and two of them are just waiting.
- Measure 1 teaspoon (5g) of wasabi powder into a small bowl.
- Add 1 teaspoon (5ml) of cold water.
- Stir with a spoon for about 15 seconds, until it forms a smooth, lump-free green paste.
- Turn a small cup upside down over the bowl, or cover it with a small plate, and let it sit for 2 minutes — this is what wakes up the full aroma and heat.
- Uncover and use straight away. Wasabi loses its sharpness after about 20 minutes exposed to air, so mix only as much as you'll eat in one sitting.
Build the rest of the sushi kit
Wasabi is one piece of the sushi night. The other two are rice and nori, and we carry both:
- Ukemochi Sushi Rice (2kg, ₹690) — 100% Japanese short-grain rice, rinsed and cooked, then seasoned with sushi vinegar before rolling.
- Premium Roasted Sushi Nori Sheets (10 sheet, ₹300) — a smaller pack that's the right size to try before committing to a larger one.
Spread the rice thinly and evenly over a sheet of nori, add your filling, dab on a pea-sized amount of wasabi (start small — it's stronger than it looks), and roll tightly with a bamboo mat before slicing.

If you want a second condiment on the table besides wasabi, our next post compares Yuzu Kosho Green against Red — both citrus-chili pastes, both very different depending on which chili they're built from.
