How to Make Matcha Latte
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp matcha powder (ceremonial or premium grade recommended)
- 2 tbsp hot water (not boiling – around 75–80°C)
- 200 ml milk (cow, almond, oat, or soy – your choice)
- 1–2 tsp honey, sugar, or jaggery (optional, as per taste)
- Ice cubes (for iced version)
Tools You'll Need:
- Matcha bowl (or a small wide mug)
- Bamboo whisk (chasen) or a milk frother
- Fine sieve (for sifting matcha)
- Saucepan (for heating milk)
- Spoon and measuring tools
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Sift the Matcha
Use a fine mesh sieve to sift 1 tsp of matcha powder into a bowl.
This removes clumps and gives a smoother, lump-free drink.
Step 2: Add Hot Water
Pour 2 tbsp hot water (around 75–80°C) into the bowl.
Avoid boiling water — it makes matcha bitter.
Step 3: Whisk Vigorously
Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) and whisk in a “W” or “M” motion until a frothy layer appears.
This step creates a light foam and dissolves the matcha well.
Tip: If you don’t have a bamboo whisk, use a small electric frother.
Step 4: Heat or Froth the Milk
- For Hot Latte: Heat 200 ml milk in a pan till warm (not boiling).
- For Iced Latte: Keep the milk cold and ready.
- Optional: Froth the milk using a milk frother or hand blender for a café-style touch.
Step 5: Sweeten (Optional)
Add 1–2 tsp honey, sugar, or jaggery syrup to your warm milk.
Mix well until dissolved. You can skip this if you prefer unsweetened matcha.
Step 6: Combine and Serve
-
Hot Latte: Pour the warm milk into the matcha bowl and mix gently.
Pour into a cup and enjoy. -
Iced Latte: Fill a glass with ice, pour frothed cold milk, and then slowly pour the whisked matcha over it.
This gives a beautiful layered look.
📝 Tips for Better Taste:
- Use filtered water and fresh matcha for best flavor.
- Store matcha in an airtight container, away from sunlight.
- Cow milk makes it creamy, oat milk adds natural sweetness, and almond milk makes it nutty.
